Performer Bio
Lyric baritone Asa Ambrose is an incoming Master of Music candidate in Voice and Opera at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, where he studies under the guidance of W. Stephen Smith. Currently based in Houston and relocating to Chicago in Summer 2026, Asa has performed on various prominent national stages, including The Kennedy Center, Miami’s New World Center, and Houston’s Wortham Center and Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
His operatic and musical theatre work spans both classic and contemporary repertoire. Recent highlights with the Houston Grand Opera Chorus include Wagner’s Tannhäuser, Puccini’s Il Trittico, Puts’ Silent Night, and Händel’s Messiah (Mozart arrangement), as well as a solo recital of American art song for Vision Possible Charity Concerts. Notable roles include Bardolfo (Falstaff), Samuel (cover, The Pirates of Penzance), the Rich Young Ruler(The Son of Man), and LeFou (Beauty and the Beast). He has also performed scenes as Papageno (The Magic Flute), Giuseppe (The Gondoliers), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), and Maximilian and Candide (Candide).
Asa is an alumnus of several prestigious training programs, including OPERA San Antonio–Classical Music Institute (Studio Artist), National YoungArts (finalist, bronze winner), Schmidt Vocal Arts, and the Washington National Opera Voice Institute. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Texas Christian University, with earlier studies at Baylor University. Throughout his career, he has worked with distinguished artists such as Jamie Barton, Margo Garrett, and Stanford Olsen, and credits his technical foundation to the mentorship of W. Stephen Smith, Dr. Robert Best, J. David Brock, and Dr. Melody Rich, with whom he also studies the Alexander Technique.
Beyond the stage, Asa is a dedicated educator and advocate for arts access. His "content-forward" teaching approach focuses on vocal efficiency and authentic expression, equipping students to become confident, independent artists. During the 2025–26 season, he served as the co-director of the Houston Chapter of Vision Possible Charity Concerts, organizing benefit performances to fund foundational music education for underserved children through the House of Tiny Treasures.
Asa is relocating to Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood with his husband, Nathan, and their Shiba Inu puppy, Cinnamon.
